We adopted a new family member!
Ada’s Story:
The farm has always had at least one dog keeping us company and watching over us through the years. These past 16 months the farm has felt quite lonely, as have we. Maybe we were waiting until our hearts fully mended (they still have not,) or maybe we were wishing we had cloned Jelly Bug (just kidding.)
We believe that many things happen for a reason, and another dog coming into our lives is one of them. We have a soft place in our hearts for rescues, adopting from humane societies, and loving on the misfit dogs.
There have been several “almost-have” dogs come home to the farm, but ultimately we didn’t feel it was the right time quite yet.
In early July through the power of social media, multiple friends shared a litter of puppies needing homes stat. Realizing how much one in particular shared similar markings as our previous dog, we quickly contacted the person.
These “surprise” litter of puppies entered the world in mid May 2024, in Central Washington, on a 120 acre working farm. The mother was a border collie, and the father from an entirely different farm was a working German Shorthair Pointer. This mixed breed is commonly bred on purpose in some cases and the cross is called a “Border Point.” We instantly fell in love with this cross as our Jelly was a Border Collie cross primarily called a “McNab.”
Ada in the lower lavender field July 2024
On Saturday July 6 we met at a local grocery store and took this little pup home to the farm. It was a day we’ll never forget.
We became fond of the name “Ada” from a German name list, and a nod to her German Shorthair Pointer background. Ada means noble, and we can hope she carries this trait through all her dog years. Ada has pretty large paws to fill, but she is keeping up with daily farm chores and activities. We are truly in love with this little pup and are enjoying her more every day. We believe animals deserve middle names, and Jane felt like it had the perfect ring to Ada. So Ada Jane became her name! Some nicknames we’ve been coming up with are “Ada Beta, Ada Ann, Ada Marie, Twinkle Toes, Stink Pot, Jaws, and Helga.”
Ada has some funny little quirks, like pinching (that’s a new one for us, we never had a dog pinch!) and have a little attitude when things don’t go her way. She loves squeaky stuffed animals, chewing on sticks, and LOVES water…she is definitely a water dog! Ada has learned how to untie shoe laces, go up the stairs, and wait by the house when she feels uncomfortable outdoors. She is very interested in the chickens and goats, and loves to watch them. She likes fruit (no grapes!) and finding sticks all around the house. The lavender fields are a playground to her, and she is still learning to walk/run INBETWEEN the rows (and not barreling through them.)
All in all Ada Jane is keeping us on our toes, but we are enjoying having a puppy on the farm again, and staying busy with this little pup!
